What Is the Difference Between Double and Queen Beds?

The difference between double and queen beds is all in the size. Either bed size will accommodate two people, but a queen size gives more sleep space. If you're cramped for space in a small room, then a double bed -typically referred to as a full size- is a better choice.

How a Double and Queen Bed Differ

Before the 1960s, double size beds (full size) beds were the only choice couples had. For many people, a queen size bed offered a perfect sleeping solution. Not as large as its super-sized cousin the king size bed, queen beds provide extra room for two average-sized people.

The sizes of double and queen size beds are available in two sizes each:

  • Full (double) bed size: 54"W x 75"L
  • Full (double) XL bed size: 54"W x 80" L
  • Queen bed size: 60"W x 80"L
  • Olympic Queen bed size: 66"W x 80"L
  • California Queen bed size: 60"W x 84"L

Why the Difference in Bed Sizes?

To accommodate taller customers and compete with those larger beds, the double bed was expanded to an XL size. The double (full) XL bed is the same width as the regular double (full), but the additional five inches in length makes it the same length as a queen size bed. The queen also was expanded to the California queen to give an additional four inches in mattress length.

In 1999, Simmons® Olympic Queen was introduced. The Olympic queen was easier on the average budget and fit most master bedrooms. The 66-inch width gave owners 12 more inches of sleeping space.

Considerations When Choosing a Bed Size

People with smaller master bedrooms often want a bed larger than a double size, but a king size won't fit. There are a few things you should consider before choosing the size of your bed.

If you opt for a full XL, Olympic queen or California queen size bed, you may have to pay more for linens and other bedding since these are not the common sizes sold. In addition, it may be difficult to find bedding in either size and your choices will be severely limited when compared to a regular size double or queen size bed.

Before you purchase a bed, be sure to take accurate measurements of your bedroom to make sure your new bed will fit in your bedroom.
